U.K. group sets up support system for mesothelioma, lung cancer sufferers

U.K. residents in Warwickshire, England who suffer from asbestos-related cancer will be among those helped by a new support group

Portland, Maine (MesotheliomaCancerNews.com) –Mesothelioma and lung cancer effects people from all walks of life, from both sides of the world, regardless of sex, age or nationality.

U.K. residents in Warwickshire, England who suffer from asbestos-related cancer will be among those helped by a new support group.

The Warwick Lung Cancer Support Group will gather for the first time at England’s Warwick Hospital next month and was set up by the hospital as well as the Macmillan Cancer Support to give those suffering from the asbestos-related lung cancer and mesothelioma the opportunity to meet others in a similar situation, learn more about the disease and get specialist advice and assistance.

“The diagnosis of lung cancer can leave people feeling isolated and frustrated at the lack of information available to them,” said Macmillan lung nurse specialist Lesley Gotschy.

“This group will provide much-needed information and support, in an informal and friendly setting. People want to understand what is happening to them and research shows that this type of help can reduce the distress that patients and their families suffer.”

The group will be led by patients suffering from the disease.

Approximately 37,000 new cases of lung cancer are reported annually in the UK, with a new diagnosis made every 15 minutes.

According to Macmillan, many sufferers fail to receive specialist assessment, treatment, information and support. Unfortunately, this means survival rates have not changed over the past 30 years.

The group is available to to lung cancer and mesothelioma patients, their loved ones and friends.
