Asbestos Dump Visited by Officials
Officials visit a dump in an aboriginal community after reports of health concerns.
MesotheliomaCancerNews.com – Officials paid a visit to an aboriginal community this week to examine asbestos risks in an area containing demolished buildings. As reported by ABC News, a Northern Territory environmental health officer and an official of the Australian government visited the area of Areyonga after reports surfaced last week regarding children playing with asbestos pieces.
Jenny Macklin, Australia Federal Minister for Indigenous Affairs, is quoted in the report as stating of the visit, “They’ll reassess again whether or not the asbestos needs to be removed… If it is found to be an immediate health risk, then we will organize a licensed asbestos removalist to get rid of the material as quickly as we can.”
As noted in the report, residents of the area have stated the Commonwealth had been aware of the asbestos issue for more than a year, but failed to take any action.
Asbestos exposure can lead to serious health conditions including mesothelioma lung cancer.
