National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health says Maine is cancer leader. Mesothelioma Cancer Lawyers Alert

Portland, ME(MesotheliomaCancerNews.com)–The federal government announced the state of Maine leads the country in the number of deaths from mesothelioma cancer. The study done by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) www.cdc.gov/NIOSH a federal agency under the direction of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) www.cdc.gov, covered mortality rates from 1999 to 2005. Maine had 173 reported deaths from mesothelioma, a fatal cancer caused by direct and secondary exposure to asbestos fibers and asbestos containing materials.

According to senior epidemiologist, Dr. Ki Moon Bang, 173 Maine residents died from mesothelioma cancers. These figures only cover reported causes of death to state and federal agencies. When humans are exposed to asbestos through direct or secondary contact they are at high risk for developing illnesses like asbestosis and mesothelioma cancer. Doctors specializing in mesothelioma cancer treatment and asbestos related illnesses state there is no cure for these diseases and illnesses.

Residents of Maine may have fallen ill from asbestos exposure by living and working in buildings from dated construction materials where asbestos abatement had not been done. Leading asbestos injury specialists claim most people who die from asbestos exposure are workers and laborers who were employed in paper mills, chemical plants, shipbuilders, pipe fitters, miners, and construction workers. Asbestos materials used in pipe insulation, fire proofing, flooring, wall board, roofing, and other consumer products were banned by the federal government in the late 1989.

American businesses started to phase out the production and use of asbestos containing materials sometime in the 1970’s or 1980’s, data covering asbestos materials production is conflicting and a heated legal debate in U.S. court rooms. Officials with the NIOSH predict asbestos related fatality rates will increase and top around 2010, this is also a matter lawyers, who defend the rights of injured workers and consumers from asbestos exposure, continue to debate today.
