Mesothelioma Cancer News (Washington) – Asbestos from a Sumas Mountain landslide is reportedly flowing into the Sumas River. As reported by KING5.com, the naturally occurring asbestos has been carried downstream along riverbanks, which has contributed to higher concentrations of asbestos being present in samples taken from the river.
Dan Opalski, Director of the EPA’s Seattle based Superfund Cleanup Office, is quoted in the report as stating of the asbestos shown in the samples, “These asbestos levels deserve close attention.”
As noted in the report, residents in the area have been sent an advisory by the Whatcom County Health Department and Washington Department of Health regarding limiting asbestos exposure from water and other sources. Officials are reportedly seeking means to effectively deal with the asbestos, with some citing a possible need for changes in planning for use of area land.
