Many Asbestos Victims Will Not Receive Assistance
In accordance with a recent court ruling, several victims of asbestos related illnesses will not qualify for government assistance.
Mesothelioma Cancer News – A recent court ruling will reportedly leave thousands of asbestos victims in the UK ineligible for state benefits. As reported by Scotland On Sunday on Scotsman.com, The Department for Work and Pensions decided to accept the conclusion of The Industrial Injuries Advisory Council (IIAC), which stated pleural plaques should not be a listed industrial injury that qualifies individuals for disability benefits.
As noted in the report, the presence of pleural plaques in the lungs is an indicator of cancer and mesothelioma risks. Some are said to fear that the decision would impact the legal right to compensation for sufferers of asbestos related diseases.
Ian Tasker, STUC assistant secretary, is quoted in the report as stating, “I have seen people who are suffering from pleural plaques who are breathless, who may have difficulty even getting around. I don’t see why they shouldn’t get access to benefit payments.”
