Photodynamic therapy - does it help in pleural mesothelioma cancer
Dallas, TX: With mesothelioma and other forms of cancers on the top hit list, researchers are working on many theories and therapies that would aid in curing cancer and in this pursuit Photodynamic therapy seems to be a promising one.
The Photodynamic therapy or PTD uses light as a tool to kill cancer cells and combines chemotherapy and surgery to cure to patient.
The photodynamic therapy:
The PTD, is a medical therapy that uses photo sensitized drug and a light source. Pre-cancerous cells and certain types of cancer cells can be treated through this therapy
The therapy follows a complete procedure through the following three steps.
1) Application of the photo sensitizer drugs: These drugs can be in the form of a cream. A light sensitizing drug, or a paste.
2) Incubation period: The incubation period could last from minutes to days.
3) Light activation: The specific tumors are exposed to a specific wavelength of light that activates the photosensitizing medium.
Working of this therapy:
In the case of pleural mesothelioma cancer, for example, by means of surgery, the chest is opened. The required cells are first sensitized, and then the fiber optic cells are placed in the body. Their job is to focus the light in the right frequency, on the specific tumor. The cancer cells are killed by the photo sensitizer
This photodynamic therapy is currently being used for oncology (cancer), dermatology (skin) and for the cosmetic surgery. This therapy might be a good news of mesothelioma cancer patient, the patient/victims of mesothelioma cancer are still to reap its fruits.
