Rocks Containing Asbestos Linked to Mesothelioma

A new study suggests that rocks containing asbestos may cause mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma Cancer News (U.S.) – Researchers have found a possible link between exposure to natural sources of asbestos and the development of asbestos related diseases like mesothelioma. As reported by HealthandAge.com, researchers from the University of California, Davis, have found that living near rocks that contain the toxic mineral may be a risk factor for developing mesothelioma.
As noted in the report, the researchers examined 3,000 cases of patients with mesothelioma, and found that a large percentage were not verified to have been exposed to asbestos through occupational means, leaving open the possibility of their having been exposed by natural asbestos sources. California reportedly has the highest number of naturally occurring asbestos sources in the U.S.
More information on the subject may be found in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
