School closes, SATs cancelled following asbestos scare
Lafayette High School closed suddenly Saturday due to an asbestos scare.
Brooklyn, New York (Mesothelioma Cancer News) – The Brooklyn based Lafayette High School closed suddenly Saturday due to an asbestos scare. As reported by NYDailyNews.com, a scheduled SAT test was also cancelled due to the fear of contamination from construction issues.
United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew is quoted in the report as stating of the matter, “There is no excuse for the Department of Education to fail to maintain the strictest oversight of its contractors and to ensure that our buildings meet the highest safety standards.”
A spokesman for the Education Department, Will Havemann, is further quoted in the report as stating of the reason for the closing, “Though air tests released Saturday morning indicated that conditions at Lafayette High School were safe, the College Board decided to cancel Saturday morning’s SAT.”
