Barrow Island (Mesothelioma Cancer News) – Workers were reportedly exposed to asbestos during clearance of the material from the site of the Gorgon gas project in Barrow Island. As reported by The Sydney Morning Herald, tests have confirmed the presence of asbestos in spillage, which Unions WA and the Maritime Union of Australia assert Chevron neglected to warn workers about, before they carried the toxic mineral in drums.

Unions WA secretary Simone McGurk is quoted in the report as stating of concern for workers after the laboratory tests results, “Unions raised this issue with Chevron over a week ago, but so far there has been no response.”

A spokesperson for Chevron is further quoted in the report as stating of the matter, “The logistics chain includes the transportation to an approved asbestos site on the mainland and we need to interview the contractors to get to the bottom of the allegations… Everyone involved should be assured that Chevron places the highest priority on the health and safety of its employees.”
